Program details

ONERO is an innovative exercise physiology program specifically designed for individuals with osteoporosis. Our mission is to empower individuals with osteoporosis to take control of their bone health and improve their overall well-being. With our expert guidance and tailored exercise programs, you can regain strength, prevent fractures, and enhance your quality of life.

Onero is a 12-month, evidence-based exercise program that improves bone density, muscle strength, and physical function. The program also includes exercises that target balance improvement, which is crucial in reducing falls and fracture risk.

Balance Component:
In the ONERO program, balance exercises play a vital role in fall prevention and enhancing overall stability. These exercises are carefully selected to challenge the body's ability to maintain balance in various positions and movements, reducing the risk of falls, which is a primary concern for individuals with osteoporosis. Some of the balance-enhancing exercises in the program include:

  • Single-leg stands: Holding a balanced position on one leg to strengthen stabilising muscles.
  • Heel-to-toe walking: Walking in a straight line with one foot placed directly in front of the other to enhance coordination.
  • Tandem stance: Standing with feet in a heel-to-toe position, creating a narrower base of support to challenge postural control.
  • Step-ups: Stepping up and down on a raised surface to improve dynamic balance and leg strength.
  • Balance beam or foam pad exercises: Utilising unstable surfaces to promote proprioception and improve balance reactions.
  • Side leg raises: Performed while standing, these help strengthen muscles that support lateral balance.

These exercises are all closely supervised by our expert Exercise Physiologists, who ensure that each movement is adapted to your individual needs and implemented safely. This personalised approach allows you to progressively improve your balance, further lowering your fall and fracture risk while enhancing your confidence in everyday activities.

Participants who would not be suitable for the program:

While the ONERO program is designed to benefit individuals with osteoporosis, there are some participants for whom the program may not be suitable. These include:

Severe Cognitive Impairment (e.g., advanced dementia): Participants who are unable to follow instructions or remember exercises may struggle with the program’s demands, posing safety risks, particularly for exercises that require coordination and balance.

Recent Post-Surgical Patients: Individuals who have recently undergone surgery, particularly orthopedic or spinal surgery, may not be ready for the physical demands of the ONERO program. They should consult their healthcare provider to determine the appropriate time to begin such exercises.

Use of Walking Aids: Participants who rely heavily on walking aids (e.g., walkers or frames) for mobility may find the balance and strength exercises challenging and potentially unsafe. They may require modifications or an alternative, lower-intensity program.

Inability to Navigate Stairs: The ONERO program includes exercises such as step-ups, which involve stair-like movements. Participants who are unable to go up and down stairs at a normal pace may need alternative exercises or additional support.

Unstable or Severe Medical Conditions: Individuals with uncontrolled cardiovascular, respiratory, or other unstable medical conditions may not be suitable for the program due to the physical exertion required.

For any participants with these conditions, a thorough assessment by an Exercise Physiologist is essential to determine if the ONERO program can be safely modified or if an alternative exercise approach is more suitable.
