Frailty can become more common as we get older, however not all older adults are frail. Frailty can be prevented or improved by progressive resistance training, also known as strength training. This is the only kind of exercise that specifically targets muscle weakness, a main feature of frailty. It also improves bone strength and is an important part of fall prevention programs.
Search the Active and Healthy directory to find a progressive resistance (strength) training program in your local area.
Hear and read more about the benefits of progressive resistance training from the Agency for Clinical Innovation.

Other exercise programs may also be available in your area, such as walking groups, aqua aerobics, and Yoga and Pilates.
If you’re just getting started with physical activity or have any concerns about your health, talk to your GP before you begin.
