Program details

Our Living Longer Living Stronger exercise program is tailored for seniors over the ages of 50.

It is a progressive strength and balance program designed to improve your strength, balance and mobility training for improving functional capacity, reducing frailty and falls.

We have many different classes running including variety of multicultural classes.

  • Participants undergo an initial baseline strength assessment for key muscle groups, such as lower body strength, grip strength, and balance, with follow-up assessment conducted regularly to track improvements and adjust training loads. Progression is tailored to each participant.
  • Balance is further enhanced through exercises like seated marches and side leg lifts, which improve coordination and posture control. Dynamic movements, including balance reaches and step patterns, simulate real-life actions, training the body to respond quickly to changes in position, while coordination drills like side stepping and agility ladder exercises increase agility and neuromuscular control.

Opening hours:

Our programs are scheduled to run during the school terms, with clear term calendars provided to help participants stay informed about start and end dates.

Please note that classes are not held on public holidays.

Cost:

The Living Longer Living Stronger program at Kogarah is available for $60 per full term (10 weeks). As this class is already subsidised, no additional offers or discounts apply.

Target age:

50 Plus

Participants who would not be suitable for the program:

While the Living Longer Living Stronger program is designed to be accessible for most older adults, there are certain participants who may not be suitable for the program without modifications or additional support. Individuals with significant cognitive impairment or dementia may struggle to follow instructions or participate safely, and those with serious mobility limitations, such as those who rely on walking aids or are unable to walk independently, may find it difficult to engage in standing balance exercises. Participants recovering from recent surgery, especially hip, knee, or joint procedures, may need to wait until they have sufficiently recovered before joining the program. Additionally, individuals who cannot perform basic movements like going up and down stairs or standing up from a chair may face challenges with the functional exercises included. Those with severe orthopedic conditions, uncontrolled medical conditions, or significant frailty may also require specialised care or clearance from a healthcare provider before participating. In these cases, modifications or a more individualised approach may be needed to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Special requirements or conditions:

Our Living Longer Living Stronger program has a few basic requirements to ensure safety, comfort, and effectiveness. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows for a full range of movement. Supportive, close-toe-shoes with a non-slip sole are required to provide proper stability during standing and balance exercises. Participants should bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the class. Before starting the program, participants may be asked to complete a SF-36 Health Questionnaire Form to ensure that they are fit to participate. These simple requirements help ensure that all participants are prepared and able to engage safely and effectively in the program.
