Program details

Health Moves is a 12 week introductory physical activity and healthy living program for people living with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression or osteoarthritis. The program is suitable for people who are new to exercise or who have not exercised for a long time. The focus is to get you comfortable with exercising safely and managing your health and to help you feel confident to continue exercising beyond the 12 week program.

The program is run in partnership with Wollongong City Council, ISLHD Integrated Chronic Disease Management and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Diabetes Service. Attendance is by registering with the ISLHD Diabetes Service, where over the phone screening will determine eligibility.  Attendance may require exercise clearance from a General Practitioner depending on type, severity or status of the chronic condition/s.

The program includes two classes per week and the cost includes individual assessment and program as well as access to leisure centre facilities for the 12 weeks. The program includes short lifestyle education sessions onsite after a number of the classes conducted by the Health Moves leader and other ISLHD health professionals. The leader will help participants plan their ongoing exercise by helping with suitable options. The centre also runs Health Moves Plus classes, for Health Moves graduates utilising leisure centre membership after the 12 weeks if they wish to continue.

Health Moves participants and graduates are also able to join the Health Moves walking group run by Health Moves graduate volunteers. Information about the walking group is available from the Health Moves leader.
